wireless range expander setup (linksys wre54g)?

Ok so I have a wrt54g router. i have taken off all security measures to get this stupid range expander to work. my level of networking knowledge is intermediary, closer to advanced than to novice.

using a laptop, i am able to connect to my router on 192. 168. 1. 1. The network settings on this laptop are ip 192. 168. 1. x, default gateway 192. 168. 1. 1, subnet mask 255. 255. 255. 0.

if i change the default gateway to 192. 168. 1. 240, i am able to access the wre54g on that address (which is its default IP). However, I cannot access the internet, or the wrt54g.

After doing some research I did a bit of work setting up WDS on the wrt54g (required new firmware, i flashed it with Alchemy-V1. 0 v3. 37. 6. 8). This is where my lack of expertise becomes problematic.

here are the two screenshots for my wds setup and my wre54g. please let me know if you can help at all. . . on hour 6. . .

    Are you sure you have the SSID set right. SSID must be identical for each wireless device in the wireless network and it is case-sensitive. Also I think you can disable. SSID broadcast.

    Before disabling SSID Broadcast on the Wireless Range Expander, please make sure that you have configured the correct SSID for the Range Expander to use. If not, the Range Expander will not be able to connect to the wireless network.
