What is the best way to pick up more wireless networks on my laptop?

My laptop has a built-in wireless, but I wonder if there a way to get distant signals. I saw the Linksys Range Expander, but did not know if it would be useful. Is the product to further expand your own network, or is it better to pick up signal from Someone Else’s network? There are any known products or software that can help pick up my laptop wireless remote signals or signals to make more? Thanks

How many people were you interested in stealing bandwidth from?

Unless you are using a wireless network card for a major wireless distributer (i.e. Spring, Cingular…) there is no real way to find other networks.

The range expander is meant to extend your home wireless network. It is really meant if you have a dead spot somewhere in your house.

Otherwise, you may be out of luck for finding networks that are farther away. Remember that the card is just a receiver.

Regretfully there is not much that can be done to inexpensively strengthen received wifi signals: Try googling for “signal booster” for antennas and amplifiers.

Also search for “hotspot finder,” and “WiFi detector” for a device, costing $20 to $30, to find available hotspots (AKA wireless networks).

    Good luck!
