Range Expander Compatability?

We want to obtain a wireless range expander for my stepdaughter, who lives with her mom and stepdad. We bought her a computer, but she’s having problems with the wireless signal since the router is downstairs and her computer is upstairs. We’ve been told the solution is to purchase a wireless range expander, which will plug in upstairs near the computer. We are looking at the Linksys Wireless G Range Expander, which we’ve been told (by the clerk at Best Buy) is universal and will work with any router. Our problem is that we don’t know what type of router is in use. Mom and stepdad won’t get back to us with a specific brand or number and time is up (it’s a birthday gift). I’ve read that you must ensure compatability for it to work properly. Does anybody out there know if the Linksys is indeed universal and compatible with just about anything? We believe they have whatever router is standard with the Verizon wireless package. Thanks so much for any help you can give!

Wow, you found the only best buy employee in America that actually gave a correct answer.

Don’t worry, it is universal for basic use. There are some different “enhancements” like MIMO that might not work unless it is the same brand, but basic “G” or basic “N” will always work with each other, not matter what brand. But beore you buy the range extender……..

MOST routers will work just fine no matter even if it is an upstairs/downstairs issue. I can see my wifi halfway down the street through multiple walls. Before you buy the extender, how many bars of signal does she have? If she has even two bars, her issue isn’t the signal, it is all the junk that most teenagers have on their computers.
