MOST people do NOT need a repeater in their homes unless they have a a computer in the basement. Wifi is strong enough to cover MOST peoples homes. That is why you can even see your neighbors routers. I can see about 10 of my neighbors and I can see my router halfway down my street.

If you can still return the repeater, I would recommend just buying an “N” series router or getting a WRT54GL and putting either ddwrt or “tomato” firmware on it.

The purpose of a repeater is to increase the range so If range consideration only was a factor, I would position the router at 1/3 the length of the home and the repeater at 2/3 the range.

The WRE54G can be used either way depending on your needs.

Plugging the WRE54G into a wired router using an Ethernet cable turns it into a wireless access point, allowing wireless devices to connect to your network

If you have a wireless network already, just plugging the WRE54G into a power outlet somewhere in the house will let it act as a wireless repeater and range extender.

In either case once you have connected it the way you want, use the auto config functions to set it up

    Have Fun
