There are a lot of things that can give you a weak wifi signal. The most common are things that have a lot of metal (mirrors, appliances, pipes) and things that use a lot of electricity (stereos, refrigerators, etc.), distance, and other radio interference.
If you are sure it’s not the metal or electricity related, then you can try changing the wireless channel that the router is transmitting, as well as it’s strength (usually at 50%, as this works better for wifi that is close. If it’s too high when you’re near, it’s like trying to hear someone who’s screaming at you. Laptops don’t like that either).
Most home cordless phones run at about the same level as Channel 6 on your router. If you have a cordless phone, then stay away from that one. Try something like 10 or 2.

Anything over three bars isn’t going to make your internet connectivity any faster.

Three bars is probably enough. Even if it’s “G” network, and instead of 54 mbps, you get 24mbps or thereabouts, you are probably still faster than your internet connection. Most internet connections are 10mbps or less, unless you have bought a real high speed package.
