I am havinging a very poor wireless connection. My range is not good. I’m told a range expander will not work.

Don’t ever listen to anyone else do what you feel is best and that’s real

Most likely this is as a result of signal dispersal. Two ways to go with this: 1.) focus the signal coming out of your wireless access point; or 2.) attach external antenna to your wireless device (laptop, desktop, etc.). I guess you could do both, which technically is a 3rd option, too. First, make sure your access point is as centrally located as possible. If that doesn’t do the trick, next I would attach a parabolic reflector to your AP’s antenna(s). You can make a parabolic reflector yourself following the instructions here: http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template/ . Using this template, I made one out of an empty cereal box in about 10 minutes, and it worked *very* well. If the parabolic reflector doesn’t do the trick, then you’re pretty much left with attaching an external antenna to your wifi card. The easiest thing it to get a card with an external antenna port (Orinoco Gold, Dell TrueMobile, Avaya, etc.). Again, you can make your own antenna with a tin can and some parts that you can pick up at Radio Shack for a few dollars. This is a bit more complicated than the parabolic reflector, but I made mine in about 30 minutes. Or you can buy a pre-made antenna someplace like http://www.cantenna.com.
